The Belle of Baton Rouge will soon be grounded forever, the once iconic riverboat casino will soon be replaced by a brick and mortar casino. This isn’t much of a surprise considering some of the recent troubles with the property. The Belle of Baton Rogue has fallen behind her land based sisters, which has lead to the decision to relocate operations inland. After 30 years of service, it’s hardly a surprise has the state of the casino has declined following multiple sales.

The Upgrade

The Belle’s sister ship, the Queen Baton Rouge, has already proven the concept of moving casino operations inland in 2023, seeing a significant rise in revenue. With the writing on the wall funding has already been acquired to the tune of 141 million for a completely updated hotel and casino.

“Gaming and Leisure Properties, Inc. (GLPI), the real estate investment trust controlled by Penn Entertainment, is the Belle of Baton Rouge’s landlord. GLPI confirmed this week that it will primarily finance the casino’s relocation. GLPI is committing $111 million to the project that’s expected to cost upwards of $141 million. Queen Casino & Entertainment will cover the remaining $30 million.”

We are extremely pleased with The Queen’s performance since its grand reopening,” said Queen Casino & Entertainment CEO Terry Downey. “As we now turn our attention to the Belle, we look forward to realizing similar operational upside from this latest move landside.”

With the Bell being located near the Louisianan State Capital, and Louisiana State University the planned 250 room hotel will be a welcome addition back. The hotel would regularly sellout for LSU Tigers home football games.

Overall, this is the natural progression of the current riverboat casino industry in Louisiana. Since their approval back in the 90s falling the Oil Bust they’ve fallen far from their peak. Now, with the option of moving operations ashore, it’s only the nature progress of the industry.
