With the adoption of legalized sports betting, online gambling has become more accessible than ever! Though there are only six states in the US that allow online casino gambling. Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and potentially soon to join Rhode Island. Even though these states have made it legal there are some differences in availability and provides in the space.

Delaware

Delaware was a leader in adopting online casinos starting back in 2013. The Delaware State Lottery oversees the casino operations and they only allow online gambling for casinos that have physical locations in the state. So this means they are missing some of the bigger operators like DraftKings.

Michigan

With Michigan legalizing online casinos back in 2019 it took till last year before the floodgates were open in 2023. After the launch last January, they have become one of the largest in the online casino scene. A total of 10 online casinos operating in the state provide some of the best variety in the online casino industry.

Connecticut

Connecticut made online casino gambling legal a few years back in 2021. Though they have been operating for several years now they only have a couple of providers currently. DraftKings and Mohegan Sun are the only two operators in the state. Though Mohegan Sun does use FanDuel to power the online branch of their casinos adds a much-needed level of polish.

Rhode Island

The newest state to add online casinos to the portfolio of online gambling is slated to join in the fun this year in 2024. An interesting part of Rhode Island’s laws is that they will require all online table games to have live dealers. This is great for people who love the pacing of a real casino and trust the live dealers more.

West Virginia

After the success of their online sports betting scene West Virginia decided to open up online casino gambling as well. Legalizing it back in 2019 West Virginia has become one of the most diversified states for online casino gambling. Currently, there are 9 operators in the state with well-known brands such as Golden Nugget and DraftKings.

Pennsylvania

Following the success of their neighbors Pennsylvania decided to legalize online casinos in 2017. In 2019 Pennsylvania finally started allowing operates to start taking bets. After 5 years they have grown into one of the largest online casino markets. With operators such as Caesers Palace, BetMGM, and FanDuel to name a few operating in the state.

Social Casinos: A Popular Alternative

Social Casinos are much more widely available in the United States, with 48 of the 50 states allowing them. The big difference between online casinos and social casinos is real money. At social casinos you are not allowed to wager real money, instead providing free games of chance and sweepstakes for players to wager credits.

These social casinos can be fun alternatives to practice games or just spend some time rolling slots. If you’re just interested in playing the games they may even be a better option than real money online casinos.

Sports Betting

With the Supreme Court ruling repealing the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) back in 2018 sports betting has taken off. With 30 states allowing sports betting across some of the most well-known online gambling platforms such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and bet365. Some of these states do have some quirks to their laws such as Oregon. Oregon allows spots for betting on professional sporting events only, so that means no betting on collegiate-level events. Many states also only offer a few providers so it’s best to check which sports bets are allowed to take bets in your state.
